Georgia

A road trip through the Georgian Caucasus

About this journey

In September 2024 Fini and I travelled through Georgia on a route that took us from Tbilisi to Kutaisi, into the mountains around Mestia and Ushguli, across to Stepantsminda and finally to Sighnaghi.

After our first days in Tbilisi and Kutaisi, the road north to Mestia changed the trip completely. The cities slowly disappeared behind us as we drove deeper into the valleys and mountains of Svaneti.

From Mestia we continued to Ushguli. The old stone towers, remote villages and snow-covered peaks made this one of the most memorable parts of the journey. We spent our days driving small mountain roads, hiking through the valleys and stopping whenever the weather or light changed.

Stepantsminda was another highlight. Low clouds moved around the mountains, while Gergeti Trinity Church and Mount Kazbek kept appearing and disappearing above the town. The landscape looked different almost every few minutes.

We ended our route in the wine region around Sighnaghi. After the colder days in the mountains, the warmer light, rolling hills and vineyards felt like a completely different side of Georgia.

What surprised us most was how much the country changed within relatively short distances. We mainly came for the Caucasus, but left knowing that there is still much more of Georgia we want to see.
